This important journal gathers materials on the situation of the Russian Old Believer community in Latvia. The recently established state was tolerant of this religious group, which had split from the Russian Orthodox Church as a result of reforms enacted in 1666 by Patriarch Nikon; persecuted by Russian authorities, they continued to adhere to older liturgical practices and religious texts and often fled to remote provinces, including Latvia. The contributions consist of the protocols of Church Believer congresses throughout Latvia, reflections on the tasks facing the community, such as the fight for literacy and employment, as well as a section on recent developments in Latvia, which defeated both German and Soviet troops by 1920 and adopted a liberal constitution, part of which is reproduced here. The volume was edited, and many contributions written, by Stefan R. Kirillov (1877-1960), an important leader and activist in the Old Believer community of Latvia. Intended as a quarterly, but apparently no further issues were published. Rare; not in KVK, OCLC.
