This edition of children's stories by the popular Russian writer Alexander I. Kuprin (1870-1938) was printed by the editors of “Zelenaia palochka,” a journal of short stories, poems, and fairy tales for Russian émigré children that was issued in Paris in 1920-21. One of three titles published in the “Biblioteka zelenoi palochki” (the other authors were Lev Tolstoy and Aleksei Tolstoi). The name, which means “the green stick,” derives from a story Tolstoy was told as a child, according to which a magical green stick with an inscription was buried on the family's estate; were it to be found, it would destroy evil and bring happiness to mankind.
