An important early study of the Soviet New Economic Policy (NEP), a program that allowed for a certain amount of private enterprise between 1921 and 1928, when it was replaced by Stalin's first Five-Year-Plan. The anonymous author spent years in the Soviet Union analyzing facts and figures on industrial and agricultural productivity and the effects of NEP. His analysis contends that the new policies have failed and that the imminent return to a command economy would stifle all economic progress in the Soviet Union and lead to crisis. The title derives from the Thermidorian Reaction, a reactionary period of the French Revolution that has since come to signify the eventual decline of any revolutionary movement.
