[Magdeburg]: [Evangelische Gemeinde], . Single leaf, A5, with mimeographed text and image to recto and verso. Very good. Item #6405
A scarce survival from the beginnings of East German oppositional activity, much of which emerged from church-related circles. "The position of the Evangelical Church in the GDR permitted East German activists the opportunity to publish and distribute uncensored news within certain limits under the protective umbrella of the church" (Doellinger, Turning Prayers into Protests, 81). The text on this handbill reads: "The student community invites Christians and non-Christians to think about the strife within and between us and about the possibility of peace. The meeting will be followed by a joint peace walk to the Anne Frank memorial. Thursday, July 9, 1981." The meeting was to be held at the Magdeburg Cathedral.
