A catalog for the second exhibition of the avant-garde-adjacent group “Makovets”, which took a spiritual approach to art and stressed the importance of a continuity of cultural traditions, with the philosopher Pavel Florensky as its leading theoretical figure. This second exhibition of 273 works by 22 artists took place in January 1924. Many of the artists in this exhibition were professors at VKhUTEMAS, such as Lev Bruni (1894–1948), who headed the graphics department, Sergei Gerasimov (1885–1964), who was a prominent representative of impressionism in Russia, Evgenii Mashkevich (1894–1945), who worked in the monumental painting laboratory, and Larisa Florenskaia (1894–1932), who worked in poster design as well as in fresco technique. The Makovets group was active 1921–1926, and published an eponymous journal with contributions by leading representatives of the literary avant-garde, such as Velimir Khlebnikov, Nikolai Aseev, and Boris Pasternak, among others, as well as reproductions of associated visual artists.
