Occasional toning and nicks to edges; one catalog with rust to staples and wear to spine; the bulk (Valters und Rapa) very good or better. Item #55754

A collection of catalogs of bookdealers and publishers in pre-WWII Riga that offered books in Russian, often alongside Latvian and German titles, showcasing the linguistic and cultural diversity of pre-WWII Riga. The collection includes a catalog of the publishing house of Karl Genrikh Zikhman (1911) with offers in Russian and German; аn undated pre-Revolutionary catalog of the antiquarian dealer David Gliksman; a catalog of the publishing house “Filin” (1930) with brief synopsis and reviews of some of the featured books; a catalog of the publisher “Grāmatu Draugs” (1930–1931) offering books in Latvian and Russian; a catalog of the publisher and bookseller N. Gudkov (1939) which specialized in Russian language textbooks in addition to literature and other topics; a catalog of the used books store “Universal” (1940) that offered books in German, Latvian, and Russian, listed interchangeably. Finally, the collection includes nine catalogs (from 1923 to 1940) of the publisher Valters un Rapa, a bookseller in operation in the same Riga location to this day. The catalogs offer books in Russian and German, and advertise their warehouses around the world from Berlin to Boston, Harbin to Tokyo, and London to Warsaw, and even 1930s Moscow.
