A German-language volume of Krylov's fables, likely the first published in the Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSRNP) shortly before the outbreak of WWII. The illustrations for the volume vary in style and seem to have been taken from a variety of publications for this translation. The Volga German Autonomous republic was established by Soviet decree in 1918, and by 1924 German language was instituted as the second language of business and the language of instruction in the local schools. The German language publishing house, “Nemizdat” (later Nemgosizdat) was also established in 1924. By 1928, Nemgosizdat published over one million books, distributed through a network of German language bookstores, with the ASSRNP becoming one of the first republics in the Soviet Union with 100% literacy. Volga Germans experienced mass persecution and deportation following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. German language publishing was brought to a halt and the Volga German Autonomous Soviet Republic was officially liquidated in August 1941. In the course of September 1941, the German population of the region was rounded up and deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan under the harshest conditions. Many of the books published in German were systematically destroyed, likely along with a significant portion of the print run of this volume. The name of the editor of the volume has been blacked out, likely because the individual was arrested and repressed. Despite the relatively high print run of 10000 copies, this volume is not in found in libraries outside of Russia.
