A mixology “cookbook” with 278 recipes for making cocktails, bowls, punches, grogs, gobblers, lemonades, self-published by one of the first Czech “American style” mixologists, Alois Chmelík. The front wrapper features a photo of Chmelík himself, photographed behind the bar of “American Bar Juliš”, one of the two American-style bars set up by the “barmeister” Victor Hugo Himmelreich in Prague. Himmelreich was also the co-founder of the International Union of Bartenders in the Czechoslovak Republic in 1921, and, like Chmelík, a creator of original American-style cocktail recipes, part of a larger trend for American-style bars in interwar Central Europe (See: Mozr, T. “The exotic phenomenon of the American Bar in interwar Berlin and Prague”, in AUC Geographica, pp. 92–104). The introductory text by Chmelík explains: “American drinks are not just random mixtures of various liquors or wines, to which we sometimes add a little lemon or orange juice, sometimes some syrup or Angostura bitters […] on the contrary, their composition is often scientifically calculated to appeal to a certain organ or sense.” A single photo-illustration showing a variety of glasses and mixing tools accompanies the text. Advertising of cafes, bars, wines, whiskey, soda water etc. to last page and rear wrapper.
