A special issue of this art criticism journal documenting Goran Dordević’s 1979 institutional critique project “The International Strike of Artists?” in which he sent letters to international artists, inviting them to strike “as a protest against [the] art system’s unbroken repression of the artist.” Approximately forty artists responded, including Marina Abramović and Ulay, Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, Daniel Buren, Jovan Čekić, Albrecht D., Jesa Denegri, Felipe Ehrenberg, Hervé Fischer, Guerrilla Art Ation Group (Jean Toche, Jon Hendricks), Michael Gibbs, Susan Harris, Harrie de Kroon, Sol LeWitt, Lucy R. Lippard, Carolee Schneemann, Raša Todosijević, and Lawrence Weiner, among others. The majority of artists declined to participate in the strike, with responses ranging from Joep Bertran’s short note “Anonymous is the answer”, to Lucy Lepard writing “rather than strike, I spend all my energy on striking back at the art system by working around and outside of it and against it”. A postcard from Carl Andre states: “I think the art system has the same relation to the world system that a seismograph has to an earthquake. You cannot change the system by means of the instrument that records it.” Marina Abramović and Ulay, meanwhile, sent a drawing of a coat, with buttons on the coat interchangeably labelled with the words “yes, no, yes, no, yes, no”. The predominance of negative responses led Dordević to abandon the idea. This special issue, with a selection of responses, was published in the hope that a global artists’ strike might one day become a reality.
