A complete catalog of the 741 items held by the newly-formed Museum of New Western Art at the opening of the museum in 1928. The museum was founded from the recently nationalized (in 1918) private collections of two major Russian art collectors, Ivan Morozov and Sergei Shchukin, as well as relevant works taken from other nationalized museums such as the Tretyakov Gallery, with each work in the catalog including a provenance mark, usually “M” for Morozov collection and “Sh” for Shchukin collection. The 32 full-page reproductions in appendix include works by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists such as Van Gogh, Degas, Rodin, Steinlen, Mary Cassatt, Rudolf Schlichter, Monet, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso, among many others. Initially housed in the former homes of the two collectors, the collections were unified in a new single location 1928, with the new museum becoming the first museum of modern art in the world. Due to the changes in Soviet cultural policy, the museum was liquidated in 1948, with the works divided between the Pushkin Museum (Moscow) and the Hermitage (Leningrad) collections.
