A speech by the philosophy professor Silvestr Gоgotskii (1813–1889), in honor of the opening of the Higher Courses for Women, Ukraine’s first higher education institution for women which opened in Kyiv in 1878. A professor at the Kyiv Theological Academy, Gоgotskii became one of the founders of the higher courses spurred by the educational and philanthropic work of his wife, Evdokiia Gogotska (1823–1889). In the speech, Gоgotskii addresses the spiritual and psychological abilities of women, which he considers equal to those of men, while acknowledging their physical weakness. He would go on to offer lectures on education and philosophy at the Higher Courses until his retirement in 1880. His wife, a philanthropist and public figure (daughter of the Kyiv mayor), Evdokiia Gogotska, was the real driving force behind the founding of the Higher Courses, along with the wives of some of the other professors at the Theological Academy. An advocate of women's education, in 1860 Gogotska founded a Sunday school for girls, and in 1865 a girls’ primary school. Gogotska was also an active proponent of Ukrainian culture, and in 1875 briefly ran the newspaper "Kievskii Telegraf" which became the mouthpiece of Ukrainian culture, until it was shut down with pressure by the censor in 1876.
