[VIDEO ART AS A TRANSGRESSOR OF THE ART WORLD] Anna Canepa Video Distribution, Inc.

New York: Anna Canepa Video Distribution, Inc. and M.L. D'Arc Gallery, [1976]. Quarto (27.8 × 20.4 cm). Original pictorial staple-stitched wrappers (Video still from Lee Levine's "Landscape II"); 23, [1] pp. Very good. Item #55029

Catalog of Anna Canepa’s distribution company. Canepa was among the first and most influential mediators of video art. In line with this new art form and its media-specific characteristics, new pathways had to be developed between artists and audiences. On the one hand, video art still required a curatorial practice similar to that provided by traditional galleries; on the other hand, it also demanded a business model akin to film distribution in the movie industry. As the medium itself transcended the conventional materials and forms of art, it simultaneously went beyond their specific modes of distribution. (Cf. Wulf Herzogenrath, Videokunst in Deutschland 1963-1982, Stuttgart 1982, p. 16).

The clearly and simply designed catalog, whose blue typewriter typography continues the color of the wrapper, lists video artworks by the following artists, plainly structured and with detailed information: Eleanor Antin, Terry Fox, Taka Iimura, Allan Kaprow, Les Levine, Dennis Oppenheim, Charlemagne Palestine, Roger Welch.

As of September 2025, KVK, OCLC list four copies in North America.
