First edition of this dramatic work by the Russian and Soviet poet, playwright, and translator Andrei Globa (1888–1964), with cover design, layout, and illustrations by the master of Soviet book design Vladimir Favorsky (1886–1964). Born in Poltava region (modern-day Ukraine), Globa started out as a poet in the Acmeist tradition, publishing his first poem in 1915. Globa gained notoriety primarily as a playwright, with many plays on orientalist and historical themes. In keeping with this interest, the present volume is a dramatization of the Biblical story of Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah. Publisher advertising to inside of front and rear wrapper.
