First, very rare edition of the two programmatic essays of the “Escena de Avanzada”. Richard coined the term in the text “Una mirada sobre el arte en Chile”, which was printed in the same year as the present publication. The two essays in “Inter/medois” also deal with the practices and theory of the Chilean neo-avant-gardes, of which Richard and Mellado were central figures. Richard emphasizes the handling of different genres and media as a characteristic of the art scene developing at the margin of established art. Influenced by Derrida's theory of deconstruction, the dissolution of genre and media boundaries promoted by the neo-avant-gardists is characterized by concepts such as margin (Margen), in-between (Inter), and presence (el presente de los signos). Richard played an important role in the neo-avant-garde scene in Chile as an essayist, cultural critic, curator, and theorist. She curated the exhibitions and edited the catalogs of the Cromo Gallery and later the C.A.L. Gallery. Together with the artists Carlos Leppe and Carlos Altamirano, she formed an influential group that was active from 1977 onwards. She also moved to the C.A.L. Gallery with the two artists when the Cromo gallery closed. But she was not only an actor herself, but also a theorist and historian of the Chilean neo-vanguard. Thus, a few years later, she wove her essays into her monograph “Margins and Institutions: Art in Chile Since 1973”. Her term “Escena de Avanzada” refers to artistic practices that were intended to promote critical awareness and undermine and question the Chilean military dictatorship on their own merits (and not as a means to the end of oppositional agitation and propaganda). Thus, the term does not refer to a clearly defined and structured group. Nevertheless, there were works by artists that she classified accordingly and with whom she collaborated in joint projects.
