Complete series of the Chilean neo-avant-garde Journal, published in only four issues as the organ of the art gallery of the same name, the first gallery in Chile to open its doors to young artists and experimental art. The journal was also the central organ of contemporary, critical art for the short time it was published during the military dictatorship. This was due in no small part to a section in which a diagnosis of various aspects of Chilean cultural activity was presented on the basis of short questionnaires addressed to critics, artists, and academics. As stated in the introduction to one of the issues, the purpose of these dossiers was to “encircle a Chilean cultural reality." They dealt with the visual arts in 1978, the situation of literature and literary criticism in Chile, and the situation of art criticism in the country.
The four issues were a central building block of the movement that Nelly Richard labeled “Escena de Avanzada” two years later. Richard was the editor of the last two issues and acquired contributions from Carlos Leppe, Carlos Altamirano, Diamela Eltit, Enrique Lihn, and Raúl Zurita. At a time when creative and intellectual activities were severely restricted, Richard was able to create exhibition, publication, and networking opportunities for various players in the Chilean cultural scene. Although the journal was exceptionally short-lived, it was known for its high artistic and editorial standards and exerted an influence on the Chilean art world that can hardly be overestimated. (Cf. the explanations at: http s ://ww w.memoriachilena.go b.cl/602/w3-article-3318.ht ml, accessed on September 20, 2024) However, the issues not only contain articles on contemporary Chilean art, but also on the various positions in Latin America as a whole and in other parts of the world. Number two, for example, contains an article on Jorge Glusberg, “the driving force behind CAyC and other activities”. The CAyC group is then presented again in detail in the third issue. Fluxus and Pop Art from North America and Europe are also discussed.
As of September 2024, KVK, OCLC lists seven North American libraries with a complete run and two other libraries with single issues.
