A catalog with critical essays published for the 1927 exhibition of book covers of Leningrad graphic artists, with full-page color reproductions of selected book covers in the text, including works by major Soviet book designers such as Kirnarsky, Mitrokhin, Pozharsky, Khizhinsky, Shillingovsky, and Chekhonin. The volume includes an appendix with information about the twenty artists whose work was on display at the exhibition, containing the title, author, and publishing house for each book. The editor of this volume, Lidiia Bulgakova (1893–1947), was a bibliographer and lecturer at the Institute for the Study of the History of the Book. In addition to this publication, she produced numerous bibliographies such as “Literature on the Women’s Question” (1926), “Books on Books” (3 vols. 1927–1932), as well as “Soviet Press” (1928) for the International Exhibition of the Press in Köln.

The cover design for this volume is by Sergei Pozharskii (1900–1970), whose work was also included in the exhibition. A graduate of the Kyiv Academy of Arts (1923), he worked mostly in Leningrad, designing fonts and book covers such as this one, where the letters of the title recall the pages and bindings of a book.
