This monograph captures twenty years of independent Estonia through public and private housing, documented on 271 photographs of buildings from the First Estonian Republic. They include administrative, school, religious, industrial, private and residential buildings built before the Second World War, as well as interior and exterior views of the now ruined Oru Palace complex and its outbuildings. The photographs are introduced by an essay on Estonian architectural history by Hanno Kompus and statistical tables on housing conditions in 1923 and 1938. The book was edited by Architect J. Ostrat, Director of the Works Department at the Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with K. Bölau. The cover and overall typography was designed by P. Luhtein. Loosely inserted is a booklet with captions for all images translataed into English, French, and German, as well as brief resumes.
The book's importance is indicated by the existence of a 2006 reprint. The image quality, however, is much higher in this original edition.
As of July 2024, KVK, OCLC show three copies in North America (CCA, Columbia, NYPL).
