Originally a student of the icon workshop of Pavel Kurbatov in Minsk, Gutkovskii served in the Red Army from 1919 and later learned engraving in St. Petersburg, where he was exposed to constructivist tendencies at the local VKhUTEMAS (Higher Art and Technical Studios). He went on to create numerous agitational posters, as well as graphic arts, book plates, wrappers and illustrations, working in a range of media. From 1921, he also participated in various exhibitions, including the 1925 All-Belarusian Art Exhibition.
The catalog lists new literary works, among them by Ianka Kupala, periodicals, textbooks for schools, various non-fiction works, and upcoming publications of the nascent Soviet Belarusian publishing world.
