[SURREALISM IN THE CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC] Spojité nádoby [Communicating Vessels, originally: Les Vases communicants]. Translated by Jindřich Honzl and Vítěszlav Nezval.

Prague: S.V.U. Mánes, 1934. Octavo (20 × 13.4 cm). Original printed light pink wrappers; pictorial dust jacket illustrated with a drawing by Toyen; 180, [2] pp. A very good copy in very good dust wrapper; very minor nicks to spine extremities. Item #54024

First Czech edition of Breton's essay, originally published in 1932, which explores the relationship between reality and dreams, and which also includes a brief correspondence with Sigmund Freud. It was the first of Breton's texts to be translated into Czech. Toyen drew directly on Max Ernst for the design of the cover image, using his technique of making collages from nineteenth-century steel engravings. Official collaboration between the Parisian Surrealists and the Prague circle around Nezval, Toyen, and Štyrský, and finally Teige, occurred when Breton and Eluard went to Prague in the spring of 1935; a return visit by the Prague group followed in the fall. The result of the meetings was, for example, the joint publication of the "Bulletin international du Surréalisme". (Anja Tippner, Surrealismus in Prag, Cologne, Weimar and Vienna 2009, p. 37.)
