[First Czech Edition of The Great Gatsby].
First edition of Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" in Czech, translated for the Odeon series of world literature by Lubomír Dorůžka (1924-2013), the Czech musicologist, who became a specialist in Jazz music, and a close friend of Josef Škvorecký. With a preface by František Vrba, which seeks to make the book palatable to Czechoslovak censors. While acknowledging Fitzgerald's "tender understanding of human longing," the author reminds readers that he failed to achieve a "conscious revolutionary understanding."
Rare. Outside the Czech Republic, KVK and OCLC only show the copy at University of South Carolina (Matthew J. and Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald).
