Petrograd: Tip. Fleitmana, 1915. Octavo (16.2 × 12 cm). Original printed wrappers; 28 pp. Wrappers lightly soiled; tiny Soviet bookstore mark to rear wrapper; still a very good copy. Item #3971
Scarce exhibition catalog of the Russian Imperial Society of Watercolor Painters, held in wartime Petrograd. The exhibition included a wide range of artists, some of them not well known and represented with only one work. More well-known artists, such as Alexander N. Benois, are also included. In addition to prices, the catalog also lists the current address of all exhibited artists. The Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts was started as a private organization in 1821, with the aim of supporting artists of all social backgrounds who had no other patronage; eventually it grew significantly and began to receive state subsidies. Not in KVK, OCLC, which only show the catalog of a 1917 exhibition by the Society.
