Anton Chekhov met his future wife, Ol'ga L. Knipper (1868-1959), at rehearsals for "The Seagull" in 1898. Knipper was among the first members of the MKhAT, directed by Konstantin Stanislavski. They married in 1901, but their extensive correspondence began in 1899 and lasted until Chekhov's death in 1904. Failing health forced him to spend his winters in Yalta, while his wife worked at the Theatre in Moscow. This volume gathers their intimate correspondence, the bulk of which is included here, for the first time. With a three-page preface by E. N. Konshina.
